ClassiMark Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-08-28 · Last updated: 2026-09-01
This policy explains how the ClassiMark browser extension handles information when you use it to classify, search, clean, and organize bookmarks. “ClassiMark”, “the extension”, or “we” refers to the extension developer.
1. Summary
- ClassiMark does not operate a developer-controlled server for bookmark processing.
- Bookmark classification runs in the extension and stores results on your device.
- If you use AI classification, ClassiMark sends the bookmark title, URL, and your current category-taxonomy names to the AI endpoint you configure.
- Your API key is stored in the extension's local storage on your device and is sent only to that configured AI endpoint for authentication.
- ClassiMark does not include advertising networks, analytics SDKs, trackers, remote logging, or beacon collection.
- We do not sell bookmarks or classification results.
- You must see and accept an in-extension data-processing disclosure before AI classification. You can withdraw that consent from Settings → Data & privacy.
2. Information processed on your device
ClassiMark processes the following information locally to provide bookmark classification, search, duplicate cleanup, backup, restoration, and folder organization:
- Bookmark IDs, titles, URLs, folder locations, and creation/modification metadata returned by the Chrome Bookmarks API.
- Categories, tags, category source (
AI,rule, ormanual), and classification timestamps. - Your custom category taxonomy.
- User settings, including API endpoint, model, batch size, interface preferences, language, and theme.
- Classification-queue state and pending automatic-classification IDs.
- Folder-organization backups, including folder names and bookmark IDs, titles, URLs, and parent-folder IDs.
- Whether you completed onboarding and whether you gave AI data-processing consent.
- A local bookmark cache used to open the interface faster.
This information is stored in chrome.storage.local or the extension's local localStorage area. Folder backups are limited to the five most recent versions. The local bookmark cache is refreshed from Chrome's Bookmarks API.
3. Information sent to a third-party AI service
AI classification is optional. Before it starts, ClassiMark shows a disclosure and requires you to select Agree and continue. Consent is recorded locally and scoped to the current AI endpoint and disclosure version. If you change the AI endpoint, you must review and accept the disclosure again.
When you test a connection or run AI classification, ClassiMark sends:
- The configured API endpoint and model name.
- Your API key as an authorization header.
- For connection testing: a minimal request to verify connectivity or authentication.
- For classification: bookmark IDs, titles, URLs, and the names of your current category taxonomy, packaged as a prompt.
These requests go directly from your browser to the AI endpoint you configured. ClassiMark does not proxy them through a developer server.
Your chosen AI provider is an independent processor or service provider. It may process prompts according to its own privacy policy, retention rules, and regional disclosures. You should review the policies of that provider before connecting it to ClassiMark.
Rule-based classification and manual edits do not send bookmarks to an AI service.
4. API key and exports
Your API key remains in the extension's local storage. It is not included in ClassiMark's JSON export file.
Do not share an export file containing bookmarks, categories, taxonomy, or settings with anyone you do not trust. Exported settings exclude the API key, but other exported data may still reveal browsing interests.
5. Permissions and their purposes
- Bookmarks: read bookmarks and folders, classify them, identify duplicates, create category folders, move bookmarks, create restore points, and restore backups.
- Storage: save settings, consent, categories, tags, taxonomy, queues, and folder backups on your device.
- Alarms: resume an interrupted classification queue and run the optional automatic-classification queue.
- Side panel: open ClassiMark in Chrome's side panel.
- Optional host permission for your AI endpoint: allow requests only to the origin you configure, such as
https://api.openai.com/*. ClassiMark does not request all-site host access at installation.
You may withdraw consent from Settings → Data & privacy. Withdrawing consent stops future AI classification requests, but it does not by itself delete existing local results. Existing local classification results remain until you clear them or remove the extension.
6. Retention and deletion
Data remains on your device until you delete it or remove the extension.
You can:
- Clear classification results from Settings → Data management.
- Reset the taxonomy from Settings → Taxonomy management.
- Remove an API key by clearing the key field and saving Settings.
- Withdraw AI data-processing consent from Settings → Data & privacy.
- Remove an AI endpoint's optional host permission through Chrome's extension/site permissions.
- Remove the extension, which deletes extension-managed local storage and local caches from the browser profile.
Chrome may retain data according to its own browser-sync, backup, or extension-data behavior outside ClassiMark's control.
7. Children
ClassiMark is not directed to children under 13 or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the extension.
8. Changes and notice
If this policy or the extension's data handling materially changes, the in-extension disclosure version will be increased where practical, and the published policy will show a new effective or last-updated date. Material changes to AI data processing will require renewed explicit consent before classification continues.
